OTC medicines for hemorrhoids medicine
A lot of hemorrhoids medicine products marketed for the treatment of hemorrhoids are sold. These often contain the same drugs used for treating anal symptoms such as itching or discomfort. There are few studies showing that they are doing something for hemorrhoids. The hemorrhoids medicine may just reduce the symptoms of hemorrhoids. However, it is possible that the effect of hemorrhoids medicine for the treatment of anal conditions other than hemorrhoids such as idiopathic anal itching, that often accompany hemorrhoids.
Products most often used for treatment of hemorrhoids is available as ointments, creams, gels, suppositories, foams, and pads, in general called hemorrhoids medicine. Ointments, creams and gels when used around the anus should be applied as a thin covering. When applying hemorrhoids medicine to the anal canal these products should be introduced with a finger or a “pile pipe.” Pile pipes are most effective when they have holes on the sides and also at the end. Pile pipes should be richly lubricated with ointment prior to the introduction. There are hemorrhoids medicine suppositories or foams do not have advantages over ointments, creams and gels.
Most hemorrhoids medicine products containing more than one type of active ingredient. Almost all hemorrhoids medicine contain a protectant aswell as another ingredient.
The use of hemorrhoids medicine as local anesthetics used against hemorrhoids temporarily relieve you of pain, burning and itching by numbing the nerve ending. The use of such hemorrhoids medicine products should be limited to the perianal and lower anal canal. Local anesthetics can cause allergic reactions with burning and itching, and therefore, if the burning and itching increase with the application of anesthetics should be discontinued.
Local anesthetics include:
Benzocaine 5% to 20% (American Hemorrhoidal, Lanacane maximum strength, Medicon)
Benzyl alcohol 5% to 20%
Dibucaine 0.25% to 1.0% (Nupercainal)
Dyclonine 0.5% to 1.0%
Lidocaine 2% to 5%
Pramoxine 1.0% (Fleet Pain-Relief, Procto Foam System Non-steroid, Tronothane hydrochloride)
Tetracaine 0.5% to 5.0%
