Corticosteroids reduce the inflammation and can relieve the itching, but their chronic use can cause permanent damage to your skin. They should definatly not be used for more than short periods in a few days up to a maximum of two weeks. Only products with weak corticosteroid effects are OTC. Stronger corticosteroid products available by prescription should not be used for the treatment of hemorrhoids.
